South African Hunters Call for Lifting of Ban on Rhino Horn Trade

Just as the world’s rhinoceros population teeters on the brink of extinction, with nearly 150 rhinos having been killed in South Africa this year alone, hunters in the southern African country are calling for the lifting of an international trade ban on rhino horns.

Giving endangered species such as rhinos a commercial value was the only way to save them from extinction, the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association (SAHGCA) said, according to the South African Press Association (SAPA).

SAHGCA manager Dr Herman Els is reported to have said the organization would  ask South Africa to lobby for a change in the white rhino’s protected status at the next Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in 2013, to enable a controlled trade in rhino horn.

Opening a new front on the assault against the rhino population is not going to make the situation any better.
